History

Since 1978, Seattle Tilth has been teaching people throughtout the region about organic gardening and urban sustainabilty.

Since 1978 Seattle Tilth has been educating King County gardeners about organic gardening methods, composting and urban ecology.

In our two demonstration gardens, visitors can learn through educational signage and seasonal plantings all about organic gardening.  Our demonstrations include year round vegetable gardening, drought tolerant and disease resistant ornamental plantings, yard waste and food waste composting, and soil building techniques. Staff garden coordinators work with volunteers to install and maintain all of the demonstrations. Our gardens are also home to various workshops throughout the year.

At our home base in Wallingford we host annual events including the Edible Plant Sale the first full weekend in May and the Harvest Fair on the second Saturday in September.

Seattle Tilth's Children's Garden, adjacent to Meridian School at the Good Shepherd Center, is sprouting young gardeners year round. Earth Steward school programs and tours provide hands-on learning for school classes, and kids ages 2 to 12 care for our garden in summer camps and programs.

We operate the Natural Lawn & Garden Hotline for the City of Seattle. Our educators answer gardening questions daily at (206) 633-0224. Another part of this great program is annual training of Master Composter/Soil Builders, volunteers who spread the word about soil health around the city.

We publish the best-selling Maritime Northwest Garden Guide, an essential month-by-month resource for organic vegetable and herb gardening. First published in 1992, it is beloved by gardeners from coastal British Columbia to central Oregon.

Seattle Tilth's greatest strength is the wide array of hands-on educational programming we offer throughout the year -- from informal clinics on composting with worms to indepth seminars on chicken husbandry.

The best way to find out about all the activities at Seattle Tilth is to join as a member and get on the email listserve.
