The Campaign for Rainer Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands

With your help, Seattle will have a new park where a diverse community can grow nutritious, affordable food and learn sustainable farming practices.

Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands (RBUFW) is Seattle’s largest urban farm in Seattle. It's producing healthy food for the community while also serving as an outdoor classroom and learning center for urban agriculture and stewarding our natural environment.

High School at RBUFWLocated on eight acres in the heart of one of our nation’s most diverse neighborhoods, Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands is a welcoming community gathering place where people from diverse backgrounds are building a common sense of purpose and a shared sense of belonging.

Jointly operated by Seattle Tilth and the Friends of RBUFW, in its first two years of operation, the project has already produced thousands of Harvest Daypounds of organic produce and has engaged thousands of community members, including immigrants and refugees, K-12 students, seniors, and many others.

The Vision

The long-term vision of the farm is to create a multi-faceted sustainable urban farm and education center with a high level of community participation, including:RBUFW House 2

  • urban farmland that will produce more than 10 tons of organic produce each year, distributed directly to the community
  • a children’s garden, community learning gardens and indoor/outdoor classroom spaces
  • cooking and nutrition education and community meals   Lunch Time!
  • community market stand that sells farm-fresh
  • produce, fresh eggs, canned goods and other food items, also serving as the hub for our distribution of food for low-income residents
  • greenhouses for intensive, year-round production of organic fruits and vegetables
  • a community gathering area, including a solar canopy and wash station
  • restored and protected wetlands along Lake Washington
  • a fruit orchard, apiaries, native plant nursery and compost center

Once completed, the farm will involve more than 5,000 community members each year, including students, volunteers, neighbors, and naturalists. It will also serve as a model of how urban parks can engage and inspire a community to learn, work and celebrate together.

The Capital Campaign

Seattle Parks Foundation is leading the capital campaign to raise the $1.35 million in private funds needed to improve the greenhouses, build new classroom and kitchen space, develop cold storage and wash stations and update the facilities. These improvements will make it possible to realize the vision of an education center where all of the neighborhood’s children and adults can embrace nutritious eating, healthy food, and the natural environment.

That's why we are reaching out to philanthropic leaders and the broader community to complete this campaign in the months ahead.
