Yes on I-522

Seattle Tilth Endorses Initiative 522, Encourages Everyone to Vote “Yes” to Label GMO Foods

Seattle Tilth supports I-522 which requires the labeling of foods produced through genetic engineering (GE) the result being genetically modified organisms (GMO). We believe consumers have a right to know if foods have been genetically engineered so they can make informed choices about food they buy and consume.

What Is I-522?

I-522 will require a standard labeling system that will ensure consistency across suppliers throughout the supply chain -- from seeds for home gardeners and farmers to food manufacturers to consumers.

Concerns About GMOs

Organic SeedsThere are many unanswered questions about existing, and potential, consequences of genetically modified foods on our health, environment, food security and economy. USDA organic standards prohibit GMOs – just one of many indicators that GMOs do not meet minimum agricultural standards that protect the environment and consumers from toxins.

The Food and Drug Administration lacks an adequate pre-market approval process for GMOs to assure health and safety standards for consumers. Genetic engineering of crops, different than the traditional agricultural practice of hybridizing, is relatively new and no one fully understands the long-term impacts that GMOs might have.

Label Seeds & Foods So Consumers Can Decide

The intent of I-522 is not to ban GMOs. It’s just about labeling them so consumers will be able to identify which foods have GMOs and make informed decisions for themselves about buying, eating and feeding their families foods that have been genetically altered in a laboratory.

Why Does Seattle Tilth Care?

At Seattle Tilth, our mission is to inspire and educate people to safeguard our natural resources while building an equitable and sustainable local food system. We teach people how to grow food using organic techniques which support a healthy environment and healthy source of food. We believe that all people deserve access to healthy food and a healthy environment, and a right to have the information needed to make decisions about these topics for themselves and their families.

There is extensive precedent for the public to know what’s in our food. The public expects for food labels to tell us nutrition facts, ingredients, expiration date and whether a food was grown organically. It’s appropriate for the public to know whether the DNA in our food has been modified by biotechnology corporations.

We support YES ON I-522 and hope you will too. Keep an eye out for your ballot coming in the mail, encourage your friends to VOTE and get your ballots in by November 5 (or earlier)!
