After School Cooking Clubs

Find out about the work CKNW is doing in local schools.

SYGW PeaceTilth Alliance offers cooking and nutrition education cooking and nutrition education for children and youth in the kitchen. By cooking with young people, we model healthy eating without lecturing. We hope to inspire students to cook for themselves and others. Hands-on learning is preferred by young people and translates well to their everyday lives, supporting them towards a lifetime of healthy eating.

SYGW Dig-inKey Principles of Our Cooking Clubs

  • Use fresh local produce as the foundation of meals.
  • Meals are mostly prepared “free style,” without recipes, to explore our creativity using available ingredients.
  • Students share their cultural food traditions and create an atmosphere of acceptance.
  • SYGW CircleStudents practice leadership to teach their peers skills that they are confident in sharing.
  • Knowledge is power. We provide information so everyone can make their own informed choices based on what they find important for themselves.
  • Giving thanks -- it is our tradition to create a space before we eat to give thanks for one thing in our lives.
