Wetland Steward at Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands

Assist with wetland restoration, including leading weekly to biweekly work parties, with staff and volunteer support, at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands. Assist in developing environmental education curriculum for work parties and volunteers, and/or assist in developing an onsite native plant propagation system and education.

Position Overview

Community members of all ages come together to learn how to grow food organically and restore a wetland ecosystem at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands. For Tilth, creating a healthy wetland ecosystem reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship as the foundation of a local food system that is sustainable and equitable. Much of the wetland restoration at the farm is also part of a citywide effort, the Green Seattle Partnership, which empowers volunteers to improve the ecosystem health of 2,500 acres of urban parklands.

Wetland Stewards work together to lead environmental stewardship and learning activities related to watershed ecology and conservation. Alongside Tilth staff and community volunteers, you’ll help restore a wetland ecosystem by removing invasive weeds and installing native plants. Wetland Stewards receive training on topics including restoration ecology and techniques, wetlands and forest ecology, environmental education and natural history, and volunteer and group management.

Time Commitment: Wetland Stewards commit to attend monthly wetlands restoration work parties and ongoing learning opportunities for at least 6 months. Restoration activities take place at least one Saturday each month (10 a.m.-3 p.m.), with additional day and evening opportunities available during the week.

Compensation: This is an unpaid intern position, but can be completed for school credit at some institutions.

Work Site: Restoration activities take place at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands (5513 S Cloverdale St, Seattle).

Supervisor: Lizzy Stone, Environmental Programs Coordinator
