Celebrate the transformation of Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands into a hub for sustainable urban farming and community connection in Southeast Seattle! The Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, Tilth Alliance and Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation are happy to invite the community to Farm Fest at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The community event is free to attend, but donations will be gladly accepted.

Festivities on the farm will be fun for all ages. Visitors can pick tasty blueberries in the food forest, attend cooking demonstrations and learn how to make spring rolls in the classroom, discover the features of the wetlands, plant seeds to take home, take self-guided tours, and more. While exploring the farm, food and drink will be available from local food trucks like Where Ya At Matt and Frelard Tamales. The Farm Fest stage will feature a full schedule of live music, including sets from KEXP DJ Stas THEE Boss and performance by Dance Brazil.

The farm, a unique city park owned by Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and co-operated by Tilth Alliance and Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, sits on 10.9 acres and serves as an anchor in Rainier Beach’s Food Innovation District, integrating organic urban farming, experiential environmental education, community-building activities and youth development.

Through dozens of partnerships with individuals and organizations, the community’s vision for transforming the site into a “third place” for the neighborhood is taking root.

The farm brings together diverse communities to learn, play and connect, and will produce and distribute fresh food to the Rainier Valley community. On visits to the farm, one can often witness or participate in planting and harvesting crops, restoring wetlands, cooking and sharing delicious meals, learning job skills or simply enjoying the pleasure of being in a natural setting.

A successful three year capital campaign with Seattle Parks Foundation to raise funds culminated in a major renovation project completed earlier this year. Improvements included building out a learning farm, outdoor and indoor classroom spaces, a commercial kitchen, greenhouses, a food forest, apiary, and a green connection between Beer Sheva Park and Pritchard Beach Park. A wetlands restoration project is ongoing and provides opportunities for outdoor science education and environmental stewardship for people of all ages.

Farm Fest at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands is sponsored by Chinook Book and QFC,  with help from KEXP.

About the Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands

The Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands is a committed group of neighborhood residents and community members who developed the vision for the project, and partnered with Tilth Alliance to secure the initial commitment of public funds. They have mobilized hundreds of community members, generated excitement and support throughout the city, and are leading efforts to maintain and sustain the vision and mission of the farm as a public space for community engagement, education and economic development.

About Tilth Alliance

Through innovative educational programs, Tilth Alliance teaches people of all ages how to grow, cook and eat nutritious food in ways that regenerate healthy ecosystems. They use gardens, farms and kitchens as classrooms to offer hands-on learning experiences that re-connect people to nutritious food, local farmers and the Earth. Tilth Alliance also offers training and resources to help Washington state farmers be economically successful and use sustainable practices, which provides communities with local food security and land stewardship. They want everyone to be able to eat healthy, nutritious food, every day, at every meal. — www.tilthalliance.org
