Seattle Tilth CSA Brings Together 22+ New Farmers to Feed Local Community

May 13, 2014

[Seattle, WA] – Now in its second year, Seattle Tilth has launched a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and is seeking members until May 23.

Why are CSAs important and what makes this one unique? CSA members provide direct support to farmers by funding them up front in exchange for a weekly box of fresh produce. This creates some financial security for farmers, a closer relationship between farmers and eaters, and a reliable source of farm fresh food for the community.

Seattle Tilth Produce is fresh from our educational farms, grown using organic and ecological practices. Seattle Tilth CSA members are invited to seasonal events at the farm and receive weekly updates and recipes.

Support New Farmers
The Seattle Tilth CSA is a unique model supporting 22 farmers from Seattle Tilth Farm Works’ “farm incubator” program where new, immigrant and limited resource farmers develop small farm businesses with training and support from Seattle Tilth. This year, twelve new farmers join ten ongoing Seattle Tilth Farm Works farmers, coming from Somalia, Kenya, Thailand, Mexico, India, across the US and around King County.

Produce from the CSA also supports dozens of youth participating in the Seattle Youth Garden Works employment program and Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands educational farm, as well as other regional family farmers.

One member said of the 2013 CSA, “Friendly folks, great food, loved being part of the beginning of an awesome community project.” Another stated that a highlight was “knowing that it was all healthy, organic produce for a great price serving a great purpose.”
