Master Composter/Soil Builder Program

The Master Composter/Soil Builder (MC/SB) Volunteer Program is a key partner in Seattle’s waste reduction and recycling efforts. The primary goal of the MC/SB volunteer program is to increase resource conservation efforts by city residents through community outreach, demonstrations and educational support. City residents are encouraged to recycle organic wastes in their own backyards to build urban soils and create healthy landscapes throughout the city.
We all know that reducing the use of fossil fuels is essential to reducing climate change. But there’s something closer to home that you can do. Soil building with compost and mulch is an easy way to take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and put it back in the ground.
The Master Composter/ Soil Builder training will teach you to assess your personal carbon footprint and develop a climate change action plan that starts in your own backyard.
As a Master Composter/ Soil Builder, you will learn to:
· Build healthy soil with compost and mulch
· Grow beautiful natural gardens
· Understand your connection to climate change
· Assess your personal carbon footprint
· Reduce pesticide use
· Conserve water and protect water quality
The Master Composter/ Soil Builder training is an in-depth, 3-week program and will be held on March 19th, 22nd, 29th and April 2nd, 5th and 9th in 2008.
The Master Composter/Soil Buildier training is valued at $500.00 per volunteer, which includes; training, manuals, educational materials, and compost bins. We require a deposit of $150 upon acceptance to the program, which will be refunded when 40 hours of volunteer outreach for the program. Outreach hours must be completed within 12 months of training completion to be eligible for refund.
As a MC/SB graduate, you will become part of a select group of Seattle residents making the big picture personal and sharing what you learn with friends, neighbors and the community at large.
Master Composter/Soil Builder training is part of the Natural Soil Building Program, managed by Seattle Tilth and sponsored by Seattle Public Utilities.Questions? Contact Graham Golbuff, 206.633.0097 or grahamgolbuff@seattletilth.org
